Burn test opens Japan to maker of fire-retardant siding

March 27, 2002

CHEMCO Inc., a Ferndale-based maker of chemical fire-retardant products for cedar building material, said its fire retardant Western Red Cedar siding has passed a burn test with Japan's Ministry of Construction. The company said the development will help it supply wood to the Japanese construction industry for high fire risk applications.

Japan's regulation of the construction industry's fire risk is more stringent than most due to the close proximity of living space in the country's densely populated cities, CHEMCO said in a press release. The country is "very concerned with fire safety and the threat of spreading fire," said John Gibb, president of CHEMCO.
